BUT FIRST, A SUGGESTION FOR NEW SENATORS AND CONGRESS MEMBERS (and an agenda for the new President too!)
When you arrive, THEY will want to teach you how THE SYSTEM works, and you will be provided with lists of recommended support personnel and staff for you to "lead" as you find out about how things REALLY WORK.
Suggestion: Have some real world people from your home state come to Washington, DC, with you:
1. Select 1/3 of your personnel from the rural areas of your home state, with a focus on people who have worked in mix of small local businesses.
2. Select 1/3 of your personnel from the metro areas of your home state, half from urban areas half from the central part of the metro area.
3. Select 1/3 of your personnel from the Washington, DC, pool.
4. Rotate 1/3 of each 1/3 every three years so you keep fresh, well rooted people around you, mostly from your home state. Select extraordinary, skilled, articulate, thoughtful, and considerate people who are also willing and unafraid to tell you when you have bad breath.
This will help you stay in touch with reality, instead of falling so quickly into the unique mindset that exists only in the nation's Capital. Avoid the three year DCA brainwashing pitfall that has ruined many a solid newbie to the awe of the pomp and circumstance, etc., of the professional handlers.
Remember, we want statesmen and women in leadership that understand the core principles of integrity, honesty, values, and mutual respect without compromise between doing what is clearly right and what is clearly wrong -- and when in doubt, seek to better understand the difference.
