Caution: If you like to split hairs over numbers, these are 2005 data for the most part. The recession has had an impact, no doubt. Nevertheless, the table provides some very powerful insights into the size distribution and nature of for-profit employment in the United States.
This data was available to the Federal Government from its own agencies BEFORE it passed the Stimulus Bill.
QUESTION: What would you have done if you were making the decisions inside the Federal Bubble if you had taken the time to get and digest this data?
Question: Did you notice that companies having more than 100 employees only have between 50 to 60 employees per establishment, i.e. location?
Translation: gaining an enterprise in your county that has about 50 to 60 employees is a bigger deal than 50% of the for-profit establishments owned by the bigger entities.
Question: Did you also notice that only 1% of the for-profit firms have more than 100 employees?
Translation: real job growth comes from the ultra-small sector.
Challenge: really study the table carefully. You just might gain some unique insights that will be helpful as you seek to develop your own opinions on this vital matter.
